What in the midst lay but the Tower itself?
The round squat turret, blind as the fool's heart
Built of brown stone, without a counterpart
In the while world. The tempest's mocking elf
Points to the shipman thus the unseen shelf
He strikes on, only when the timbers start.

A verse taken from Robert Browning’s poem »Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came« (King Lear III 4., 1855).

Inspired by Browning’s poem Stephen King started his work on the »Dark Tower« book series. There Roland of Gilaed - midworld’s last gunslinger - is on search for the mysterious dark tower, a place where he expects to find the reason of all weird changes in his dying world.

Over the years I have been followed Roland through six of King’s books - with all their strengths and weaknesses - and now I am ready to start reading the last one. But before that I wanted to complete my own interpretation of the dark tower - as I imagine it when reading from Roland’s adventures and his adversities. So this water color was born …

For you shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing; and all the trees of the fields shall clap their hands. ~Isaiah 55

Yeah, the tower might be dark (meaning the color), its name seems to imply this. My intention was less to paint yet another dark tower ;-) but to paint how Roland might feel when he reaches the tower finally. I imagine that he will hear the ear-deafening sound of bells again. It is so extremely loud that he must put two of his bullets into his ears. He might think of his tragic adventures and adversities ... and now he found the tower ... but what will be the answer?

Ok, I hope King doesn't let me down with the last book and the series can find an appropriate ending! :-) I will take a critical look at his description of the tower .... ;-)

Thank you so much! Originally I planned to paint the tower built on a turtle's neck, but i think the turtle would have taken away the focus from the tower. So I reduced the turtle's size. :-)

Thank you, James! I will keep it up, definetely ... there are still so much stories and impressions to tell! Every painting teaches me another facet of water colors and how to paint with it ... thanks for showing me this world!

At least I won with the painting the race against "the little one". ;-)
